  • La Ola Del Lago typically welcomes 5 to 7 Language Ambassadors each school year.

This incredible program is made possible thanks to the generous support of the LODL PTC, which fully funds the experience — helping bring native Spanish-speaking educators into our classrooms and community.

  • Language Ambassadors typically arrive in late August and stay through early June, aligning with the full academic school year.

Their time here allows them to build strong relationships, fully engage in the classroom, and become a meaningful part of both their host family and the La Ola community.

  • Most Language Ambassadors are young adults — typically university students or recent graduates preparing for careers in education.

  • Language Ambassadors work directly in the classroom alongside our teachers and students.

They support learning by leading small groups, providing one-on-one instruction, and assisting with classroom projects and cultural activities. Their presence not only enhances instruction — it brings language and culture to life for our students every day.

  • Language Ambassadors receive housing, meals, a small stipend, and a rich cultural experience through the generosity of host families and the LODL PTC.

  • Hosting a Language Ambassador is more about hospitality than perfection.

Host families are expected to provide:

    • A private bedroom

    • A welcoming, inclusive environment

    • Three meals per day (note: weekday lunches are covered through the school lunch program, funded by the PTC)

    • Opportunities to be part of family life and routines

You don’t need to speak Spanish or have a special setup — just a willingness to open your home and share your culture.

Throughout the year, our team offers support and resources to help make the experience smooth and meaningful. Hosting a Language Ambassador enriches your family, supports immersive language learning, and strengthens our school community.

  • Any family of a current or past student at La Ola Del Lago is eligible to host a Language Ambassador!

Hosting isn't just about offering a place to stay — it's about opening your home to connection, curiosity, and culture. Language Ambassadors are native Spanish-speaking individuals who bring energy, language, and global perspective into our classrooms.

But the impact doesn’t stop at school. Families who host often say it's one of the most meaningful experiences they’ve had — forming lasting bonds, learning new traditions, and watching their children deepen their Spanish in an authentic, everyday way.

By hosting, you're helping shape a richer school experience for all students and strengthening the cultural fabric of our community.

  • Each host family is asked to commit to one semester — either fall or spring.

Language Ambassadors switch host families at the halfway point of the school year, giving more families the opportunity to participate and share in this unique cultural exchange.

  • Not at all! While Spanish can be helpful, it’s not required. Language Ambassadors are here to share their language and culture — and many families enjoy the fun of learning alongside their children.

  • We understand that life happens! We always have families on stand-by to take language ambassadors for a few days if they cannot be with your family for any reason. Language ambassadors can also come along, or stay home if host families are comfortable with that!

  • Our program team provides training, ongoing communication, and is available throughout the year to support both families and Language Ambassadors.

  • Yes! If you're not able to host, you can still get involved by becoming a Tío/Tía Family. These families "adopt" a Language Ambassador for a monthly gathering—whether it’s dinner, a family activity, or a local event. It’s a fun, low-commitment way to build a connection and help them feel at home in Minnesota.

Another way to get involved is to volunteer for the Language Ambassador Uber group- hop on a text thread and help out with rides for Language Ambassadors as needed and as you are available!
